about
Around [?] years ago, Hugh Caley flew to Michigan from his home in California to jam with the boys. Ken Stanley and the band were running a "Give Us a Topic" game and promised to improvise a new song to any subject. Hugh, thinking about bass player Sean Whitaker's interest in conspiracy theories, suggested a song called "Confusing the Illuminati" which was then gleefully improvised by Ken, Hugh, Sean, guitarist Glenn Caley and drummer Doug Gourlay. Hugh was intrigued enough with the premise to write a full set of lyrics for the song a few days after returning to California, but it was shelved.
In 2020, looking for material for recording whilst isolated, Hugh resurrected the song. He cut a two-bar sample out of the original jam and ran it through the entire song like a drone. Hugh sang his original words to Ken's original improvised melody and chorus. Hugh also played bass, lead and rhythm guitar and an automated drum track. Glenn added twelve-string electric guitar and a vocal. Doug played some "confusing" (his word) percussives, guest Frank Pahl played the celeste, and Ken put together a "Revolution 9"-type sound collage for the outro.
The song is dedicated to our friend Sean Whitaker who died recently. You can hear his original bass riffing and laughter at the beginning of the song.
